Liverpool celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007. The city's urbanization and development are mainly due to its role as the country's main port. The famous Titanic was registered here, as were the Queen Mary and the Olympic. Its status as a port city accounts for its diverse population – people of different cultures and religions. The city is home to the country's first Black African community, as well as the first Chinese community in all of Europe. Liverpool was named European Capital of Culture for 2008, as well as World Capital of Pop, thanks to the many famous bands that originated here – one of the most famous being The Beatles.
