The University of Derby gained university status in 1992, but its experience in education dates back to 1851. The university offers high-quality education that is relevant to today's world and guarantees students solid preparation for a successful career. It emphasizes practical work, and many programs include a compulsory work placement. 96.7% of graduates go on to work or further study. In 2011 the University of Derby received The Higher Education award for "Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community" - it supports local businesses and industry through its new multimillion-pound research center for engineering and manufacturing. Overall, 75% of the university's research is considered "internationally significant", for example in reducing the costs of cancer treatment and the latest cloud computing technologies. The University of Derby is ranked 94th in the UK and is home to 16,000 students.
The city of Derby, where the university is located, is the most central city in the UK. It is considered the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and is home to the world's first factory - Lombe's Mill. Thanks to its central location, the city became the center of the British railway industry. Today it is home to the world's second largest aircraft engine manufacturer - Rolls-Royce - as well as the only remaining train manufacturer in the UK. One of the city's greatest cultural landmarks is the tower of Derby Cathedral, which is 64 meters tall. Derby has everything a student could need, whatever their interests - museums, cinemas, theaters, music festivals, clubs, bars and much more. The Sunday Times named it the cheapest city to live in in the UK in 2011.
