My Third WAT Summer

Everyone who has tried the Work and Travel adventure and enjoyed it goes for it again. That's what happened to me too. I liked spending my summers in America so much that I didn't even think twice about taking on this challenge for a third time.

I signed up for the program right after I returned from Myrtle Beach after summer 2016.

There I met exceptional people and made friendships that I hope will continue in the future. We all really enjoyed living and working together. Living in a big house with 9 other people you didn't know before is extremely fun. We worked at different places, and everyone had a story to tell in the evenings when we gathered at our place.

For summer 2017, the same group of us decided to go back to Myrtle Beach. I lived with the same girls; everything was much easier and more pleasant, because we had already spent a whole summer together and knew each other.

What was new for me this summer was my job. I was a server at a Japanese restaurant.

I had no experience as a server, so, as they say, every beginning is hard. Mine was too, but my job was extremely interesting, and I easily got used to everything that had been unfamiliar to me until then. My colleagues were unique; it was always fun at work. We came from all over the world – Russia, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Mexico, Romania and more countries. Everyone I met there taught me something. I enjoyed working with customers and it gave me a lot – I improved and further developed my English and met people so different from me, and I became a more communicative person.

The restaurant was Japanese style, with so-called Hibachi tables that have a grill, where the chef prepares the food in front of the customers, putting on a show with flames and various tricks. I had never seen anything like it before, and it was very interesting and fun to work there. The restaurant also offered various kinds of sushi, which is a very popular dish there.

During the summer our managers organized get-togethers for the whole restaurant staff, where we had a lot of fun.

Besides work, I found time to go to the beach and, even if rarely, to go out in the evenings with my roommates. We organized Bulgarian parties where we partied until morning, which I now remember with a smile.

Like all the previous ones, my third summer in America flew by in work and fun. At the end of the season it was extremely hard to say goodbye to my colleagues. When you see certain people every day and enjoy working with them so much, they become like your family. Goodbyes are always hard and unpleasant, but we parted with the promise that one day we would meet again.

For our trip this time we chose Miami – a place for the beach, parties and well-deserved relaxation after a whole summer of work. We were there for only three days, but I liked it a lot, because it was very different from all the places I had visited after my other summers in America. In my opinion, it's one of the places you absolutely have to go.

And so, with lots of smiles and only positive emotions left in me, my third WAT summer came to an end. I don't know if there will be another one, but in my mind I very often go back with warm memories to the months I spent in America getting to know the world, for which I am grateful to fate !
