Internships in the UK are similar to student summer jobs in the USA.
The destination is more accessible, less money is needed to go, and you somehow feel more at ease – after all, it's in Europe.
How did I decide to go?
My case was a bit different from those of people I know, and what I did there was different too. You know how we associate student summer jobs in the UK with picking strawberries, potatoes and other crops. I worked in the service sector, which gave me a different perspective on my whole stay there. I felt like one of them, if I can put it that way.
The departure itself happened very quickly and, honestly, a bit impulsively. But as we well know, sometimes it's exactly the small impulsive decisions that lead to something much bigger in the future. Since I had worked in the tourism sector, for me it was an opportunity to continue my work experience in the same direction, while gaining international experience, making new acquaintances and improving my English.
The sponsoring organization, TWIN, helped throughout the whole process of applying for the UK internship right up to my departure, and also gave me the opportunity to enroll in an English course and receive a certificate for the knowledge I gained at the end.
Let's move on to the more interesting part – what it's like once you get to the UK. Well, what can I say – there are myths and legends, and there are truths :D.
I can say it was a challenge – after all, it's a different culture and a foreign language. I worked as a general assistant at a small family hotel, doing all kinds of tasks. I can't say I was bored, even though the village is extremely small. For a year and a half I discovered new things and visited places I had only read about or seen on TV. What else can I say?
If you're hesitating – don't!
If you're scared – adrenaline and overcoming yourself are some of the driving forces of the world, so go ahead and sign up!
