Just two hours from Boston, in sunny Massachusetts, lie the towns of Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and Vineyard Haven. They are the heart of an ocean oasis that has found its place next to the Cape Cod peninsula. One of the best-known work and travel destinations on the East Coast, it offers not only plenty of work opportunities but also combines the tranquility and beauty of a true paradise.
Everyone who has been there on a student summer job has seen things differently, but no one has ever denied the charm of this place. A community that doesn't lock its cars or houses, confident that every house in the island's woods is the safest place in the world.
Let me tell you a little about some of the best-known places on the island:
Gay Head cliffs, Aquinnah – the westernmost point of the island is perhaps the most beautiful place, chosen by many for weddings and special occasions. Beautiful cliffs, countless colors and beaches hidden from the eyes of those who don't know about them – Moshup Beach and Philbin Beach.
Menemsha Beach – the place reserved for every sunset on the island. Tourists, students and locals alike spend the most beautiful hours of the day here. Anyone who visits this place absolutely must try the famous lobster roll.
Chappaquiddick – an inseparable part of Martha's Vineyard. This wonderful island lies just a 1-minute ferry ride from the shore of Edgartown. At its farthest point is East Beach, which welcomes dozens of fishermen from early dawn and offers off-road jeep driving on the sand for thrill-seekers. As you might guess, there is something hidden even for those looking for peace and quiet – the Mytoi gardens, located just before the beach. A true oasis, green, beautiful and as if taken from a book by a great Japanese poet. With no entrance fee and no set hours, anyone can visit this place, sit down and admire the exotic flowers and trees brought from distant lands, and feel that time has truly stopped and nothing else exists.
Lucy Vincent – an endless beach with extremely beautiful rock formations and shapes that can make anyone gasp. Used for photos or for the best shade, they stand proudly and welcome everyone who dreams of enjoying the southern ocean breeze.
Long Point – more than 3 kilometers of trails through woods and past ponds lead to a beach that is home to protected plants and animals. In this reserve, you can enjoy not only the wonderful long beach, but also choose one of the ponds right next to the sea sand.
Menemsha Hills Reservation – a two-hour walk through woods and rest areas to one of the most impressive views on the island.
South Beach – near Edgartown, this is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Easily accessible to everyone, it offers the beauty of a rough sea and big waves. Again, ponds hide behind the sand dunes and invite everyone to take a walk and set laziness aside.
The island has more than 15 unique beaches that offer something for everyone.
I advise anyone who chooses this place for their student summer job to set aside at least 3 or 4 days to explore and enjoy the beauty of this island. Work and Travel is a program that should combine work and pleasure, and what greater pleasure is there than enjoying nature?
