We are all familiar with American culture through Hollywood movies. But how accurately do they actually show us reality as it is, and are they hiding anything from us?
Here are a few things we at NGB Consulting think you should know before you leave on your summer adventure:
- America is huge. Just because the United States of America is united into one country doesn't mean your flight between 2 cities can't take 6 hours.
- Get familiar with miles, feet, gallons and ounces, so you won't be surprised by the units of measurement in America.
- Credit cards are a much more common way of paying, so you will get to know this convenience.
- Don't worry about being a foreigner – Americans are extremely friendly, and 90% of them also arrived as foreigners.
- As a compliment for their helpfulness, it's not a bad idea to leave a tip, as long as you are satisfied with their service. There is an unwritten rule that it should be between 15-20% of the bill.
- Expect the bill to be a little higher, since the listed prices do not include taxes, which differ from state to state. In some places, even the tip itself is included.
- Not only taxes, but also some laws differ from state to state. Before you start your tour of the States, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the basics of local legislation.
- One of the laws you should pay attention to is that in most states drinking alcohol is prohibited if you are under 21.
On our website you can find more information about before, during and after your adventure in America, as well as more tips, ideas and stories about the Work and Travel program in the USA.
