Brexit will take place on March 30, 2019, as we all know.
Whether the United Kingdom will leave the EU with a deal or not – that is perhaps the question of the decade.
According to the official UK government website, EU, EEA and Swiss citizens arriving between 30.03.2019 and 12.2020 will be able to work during their stay in the UK. Traveling with just an ID card will also be possible until the end of 2020.
If the United Kingdom leaves the EU without a deal, there will be some minor changes for citizens arriving from then on.
If they plan to stay longer than 3 months, they will need to apply for permission to stay, the so-called European Temporary Leave to Remain, which will give them the right to reside in the kingdom for up to 3 years.
For future/current students at universities in the UK – fees for the new 2019/2020 academic year will not be increased for those coming from the EU, and they will not need any documents other than a valid passport and/or ID card.
Deal or no deal – what does this mean for us ordinary people?
- If Brexit ends with an agreement between the EU and the UK, persons with citizenship of an EU member state who already reside in the kingdom or plan to move there before the end of the transition period (until December 2020) will have to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme.
- If there is no deal, completing this application remains mandatory, but there will most likely be additional conditions. You can find more information on how to do this on the official UK government website.
This also applies to those starting their studies in the UK in 2020.
No different rules will apply to those wishing to start work in the United Kingdom.
