The excitement of leaving for a summer work program in the USA is huge for everyone – students and parents alike. You need to prepare in advance for the long journey. It's not advisable to leave things to the last minute, as the chances of forgetting something are very high. That's why we've prepared a few tips that will make the process at least a little easier.
A few basic tips for organizing your luggage:
- roll your clothes, don't fold them – rolled up, they take up less space;
- pack your luggage in advance;
- make a list of what you need to take with you – your documents and pocket money are the most important;
- do some research on the airline.
In your carry-on luggage you can bring:
- liquids in containers of up to 100 ml, with a total volume not exceeding 1 l;
- clothes – at least one spare change of clothes if needed;
- electronics (phone, laptop, camera);
- medicines – in case you get a headache, feel nauseous, etc.;
- magazines – something to read that isn't too heavy;
- your documents – you need them to pass through the U.S. border without any problems;
- purchases from the duty-free zone (the area after you pass the Security Check) – you can get a drink, food, basically anything sold there;
In general, you put your most valuable and important belongings in your carry-on, since they stay with you on the plane the whole time.
You are not allowed to carry:
- liquids over 100 ml;
- sharp objects – scissors, razors, nail files, etc.;
- firearms;
- flammable substances;
- work tools that could cause serious bodily harm.
Depending on the airline you are flying with, the size and weight of carry-on luggage may vary; the same applies to checked luggage, which is also weighed and then scanned.
It is advisable to check the baggage conditions on the airline's website. Some airlines (KLM) don't allow you to wrap your suitcase yourself – only a special machine can do it – and locking suitcases with a padlock is also not recommended. So-called zip ties are perfect for protecting your belongings, even if the suitcase needs to be opened. Airport staff can easily cut them and the suitcase stays intact.
The rest is up to you!
Have a great summer full of smiles and excitement, from the NGB Consulting team!
