Tips Before Leaving for the USA

Everyone going on a summer work program in America for the first time has lots of questions about documents, travel and luggage. The Work and Travel program is a big adventure, and to be well prepared you should make a list of the things you'll need.

We've made a sample one for you so you don't miss the essentials:

  • Documents - passport, DS-2019 work permit, Social Security Number (if you already have one), job offer, SEVIS payment receipt and everything else the agency has told you to bring. Make copies of all documents – electronic or paper, you decide;
  • Pocket money for travel, food, rent and other unexpected expenses for about two weeks or until your first paycheck;
  • A U.S. adapter – the voltage is different from the EU, and so is the plug that goes into the outlet. It's good to have a way to charge your phone, laptop and camera, at least for the first few days;
  • Bed linen – you should find out in advance what will be provided in your housing, but keep in mind that it's a good idea to bring some bed linen.
  • Toiletries and essential medicines – American brands of medicine are different, and you need to read what they're for.
  • Don't overpack clothes – check the climate of the state you're going to, so you can decide what clothes to take.
  • Comfortable work shoes - this is very important, since you'll be on your feet all the time.
  • Don't forget the most important thing - a good mood and a smile; after all, it's a cultural exchange program! Have fun!

Have a fun summer full of adventures!

P.S. Photos are a must ;)
