The Work and Travel program is now coming to an end, and it's time for the most enjoyable part of the summer work program – the trips. If you're wondering whether to visit the capital, Washington, definitely do it. Washington is a pleasant, calm and well-organized city with lots of greenery and flowers and low-rise buildings. The city is visited by millions of tourists, as it is one of the most beautiful places in the USA and full of historic monuments. The capital will give you the chance to learn more about American culture completely free of charge, because most of the museums have free admission.
Here are some of the places with free admission:
THE CAPITOL
The Capitol is the building of the U.S. Congress. The majestic white building is 169 meters high and covers 16.5 decares. There is heightened security in front of the Capitol, and it's not advisable to leave your bags unattended. You can also tour the inside, and it's a good idea to make an online reservation in advance. There is no fee for the visit, and it is open to visitors Monday through Saturday (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). In Washington it is forbidden to construct buildings taller than the Capitol; the only exception was made for the 153-meter-tall obelisk.
THE BOTANIC GARDEN
The Botanic Garden in Washington is one of the oldest in North America and has over 65,000 plant species. When you step inside, you'll find yourself in an oasis you won't want to leave – it can't be described in words, you have to see it. It is open to visitors every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
The National Museum of Natural History in Washington aims to inspire people, encourage their curiosity and at the same time help them understand the world through research, collections, exhibitions and educational programs. Whether you're interested in human origins, the history and culture of Africa or life on the ocean floor, you can find answers to all your questions at the museum. It covers an area the size of 18 football fields, and at the entrance you'll be greeted by a 12-ton African elephant – and that's just the beginning.
THE NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM
Every one of us dreamed as a child of flying into space and touching the stars. The National Air and Space Museum has many objects and spacecraft that transport you to a different world. You can climb into Apollo 11, walk on the moon or explore the universe.
THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL
The Memorial was built in the style of a Greek temple, with huge Doric columns surrounding the entire building. Each of the 36 columns bears the name of a state that was part of the Union during Lincoln's presidency. The Memorial is open around the clock.
And don't forget to take a photo in front of the White House, even though it's closed to visitors.
