What happens in the brain when we learn a language?
Learning a foreign language can increase the size of our brain. This was discovered by Swedish scientists who used a brain scanner to observe the brain's responses while learning a foreign language.
They compared the development of young people serving at military bases and studying several foreign languages with that of young medical students. Both groups worked hard at their studies, but a difference appeared in the size of their brains. The young people who spoke and understood several languages increased the size of their brains without realizing it. Another interesting finding is that the more their brains grew, the more easily and quickly they acquired new language skills. What's more, it has been proven that people who speak more than one language have a better memory and a richer imagination. Canadian scientists have shown that such people are at a much lower risk of developing Alzheimer's.
