Interesting Facts About Martha's Vineyard

Have you heard of the island of Martha's Vineyard - MV?

Maybe you haven't paid it enough attention, thinking it's just a small island. That's far from the truth. The Vineyard (as locals often call it) is located in the state of Massachusetts, 6 km south of Cape Cod, and with its 260 km2 it is the 3rd largest island on the East Coast of the USA.

What is the story behind the island's name?

Many of you will translate the name of the island as "Martha's vineyards," but where does the name actually come from?

One of the most popular stories about the origin of the name is that after the English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold visited the island, he decided to name it after his little daughter Martha. The problem is that we're not quite sure it was that particular Martha, since his wife and his mother also bore that name.

Looking at the other explorers who visited the island, however, our doubts only grow, as the names Martin Pring and John Martin also come up. Wherever the "Martha" in the name comes from, we can't say much about the "vineyard," since there aren't really many vineyards on the island. It is believed that a special variety of grape grew there in the past.

What should you pack for your summer work program on MV?
