We assume many of you have come across the information that some students have received a payment of $1200 from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or the "CARES Act".
We want to inform you that to qualify for this financial aid, your status must be Resident Alien – i.e. you are a foreign national who has lived in the USA for at least 2 years.
This means that no student who has been on a 4-month Work and Travel program qualifies for this aid.
Here you can read the IRS requirements for Resident Alien status.
If your tax return was filed with the wrong status, you may have received these funds.
We advise you to pay attention to who files your tax return, as it is illegal for it to be completed with the wrong status.
We do not recommend using the services of unauthorized persons.
NGB Consulting partners with 2 agencies that file your tax returns with the IRS legally, in full accordance with your status.
Make a well-considered decision! You can find more information about tax refunds and the documents you need here.
If you have not yet submitted your documents for a tax refund from the Work and Travel program, here you can calculate the amount of taxes you can expect to have refunded from the summer cultural exchange program.
Stay safe and stay at home,
